Jiro dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the world’s most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. The film chronicles much of Jiro’s life, depicting key historical events, including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic and Japan’s plunge into war. Jiro meets and falls in love with Nahoko, and grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo. Writer and director Hayao Miyazaki pays tribute to engineer Jiro Horikoshi and author Tatsuo Hori in this epic tale of love, perseverance, and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world.

Hayao Miyazaki
Born in Tokyo in 1941, Hayao Miyazaki began his career as an animator at Toei Animation, where he met the director Isao Takahata. In 1978 he directed the TV series Future Boy Conan and in 1979 the film Lupin the Third: Castle of Cagliostro. In 1985 he and Takahata founded the Ghibli Production Studio, where they made Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) and Porco Rosso (1992). With Spirited Away (2001) they conquered the Golden Bear of the Berlin International Film Festival and the Oscar. In 2004 Howl’s Moving Castle received the Osella d’Oro prize at the Venice International Film Festival.
