My Mommy is in America

by Marc Boréal, Thibaut Chatel – France/ Luxembourg, 2013

(75’ , DCP, French with ita sub)

Adapted from the French comic of the same name by Jean Régnaud and Emile Bravo, the film is set in the 1970s. In a small provincial town, the young Jean has begun elementary school. When the teacher asks him and his classmates the professions of their mothers and fathers Jean realizes he is not like the other children. He grows nervous and invents an answer: “My mom, is a secretary.” In reality, his mother is always traveling and often sends him postcards, that Michèle, Jean’s young neighbor, reads to him. Jean begins to daydream. But the truth is completely different and in the months between September and Christmas of that year Jean begins to understand what it is.
