No Longer Human won the Platinum Grand Prize at the 2011 Future Film Festival! The jury made up of the comic and fantasy film expert Alberto Corradi, journalist and writer Stefano Masi and historic illustration and essayist Paola Pallottino chose Morio Asaka Japanese film with this statement: “For the high quality of the review of the traditional themes through a graphical functional poignant. Directed dosing times attigendo dramatic and visual culture by blending the Western and Japan. “ The jury awarded a special mention to Paul, by Greg Mottola (USA 2011), exhilarating trip on the road where the protagonist is an alien with the two demented movie star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost English. The motivation of the special prize: “For the ability to integrate a digital character in the drama of the play. For the balance that keeps the film from the position of independent and mainstream, ripping applause. “
Among the short films in competition for the Future Short Film, the jury composed of journalist Marco Consoli, author and television animator Guido De Maria and author Stefano Disegni gave the prize of the Province of Bologna for the best short to Bottle of Kirsten Lepore (USA 2010) with the following motivation: “For the ability to warm the heart of the viewer with an unusual and original love story, full of poetry, through the use of poor materials and techniques.” The jury has given a mention to Claire Rubik Baudean, Ludovid Habas, Mickael Krebs, Julien Legay, Chao But Florent Rousseau, Caroline Roux, Vaxelaire Margaux (France 2010) to “the insight to turn a game popular in a narrative trick that creates a gravitational surprising thriller. “
The short of Groupama Future Film Short voted by the public is Le Royaume / The King and the Beaver by Nuno Alves Rodrigues, Oussama Bouacheria, Julien Cheng, Sébastien Hary, Aymeric Kevin Ulysse Malassagne and Franck Monier (France 2010). Mobile by Verena Fels (Germany 2010) and Rubik by Claire Baudean, Ludovid Habas, Mickael Krebs, Julien Legay, Chao But Florent Rousseau, Caroline Roux, Vaxelaire Margaux (France, 2010) shared the second place.
Future Film Festival 2011:From Red Riding Hood to Arthur 3 Discover the program
The voyage to the future’s discovered of cinema will open on april 20th with the Italian premiere of Red Riding Hood, the film directed by Twilight director’s Catherine Hardwicke with Amanda Seyfried and Shiloh Fernandez. On april 21th Luc Besson will be the guest of the festival, to present his new film, Arthur 3 - War of the worlds. But the extensive menu of goodies from the FFF 2011 film does not end here, with a bit of Kung Fu Panda 2 to the new Italian super hero’s angry.
As usual will be many special events that enrich the days of the Future Film Festival 2011. We will see the making of Rango, the latest film by Industrial Light & Magic, while the director Leslie Iwerks will present the documentary film about the incredible history of the production company of George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic: Creating the Impossible. We celebrate the Mc Luhan Marshall’s media expert centenary birth with Mc Luhan100, but also the technique of flash animation. Lucio Dalla will debut as a voice actor in Apa, while the artist Eleuro will star in a live painting.
Future Film Festival 2011: First Movie Premières Announced
April is soon to come and the 2011 edition of Future Film Festival is nearer.
We are therefore pleased to announce the first three movies of the selection:
-CJ7 the Cartoon by Toe Yuen, Hong Kong, 2010
produced by the greatest Hong Kong comic actor, Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fusion), CJ7: The Cartoon is the cartoon version of CJ7, a 2008 movie directed and featured by Chow himself. CJ7: The Cartoon is directed by the Hong Kong director and entertainer Toe Yuen, famous for his first movie, the little pig McDull, presented at Future Film Festival 2004.
The story tell the tale of CJ7, funny alien who can absorb and release a mysterious energy, adopted by the little Dicky and his father Ti Chow. The little alien abilities soon prove to be cause of trouble for the family.
Even if meant for a young audience, CJ7: The Cartoon presents an interesting graphic style, proving the Hong Kong artistic revolution, one of the most innovative within the Chinese production scene.
-The Borrower Arrietty by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, Japan, 2010
The new movie by the celebrated Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata’s Ghibli Studio, directed by a debutant, the Japanese Animation young promise.
The “borrowers” are a micro-human community 10 cm tall, living underneath house floors and borrowing objects of general need. One day the borrower Arietty casually meets the young Sho, a human who is convalescing in his old grandmother’s house, and between the two fall in love. Their relationship will have to overcome many obstacles.
-Helldriver by Yoshihiro Nishimura, Japan, 2010
The much awaited splatter cult director Yoshihiro Nishimura’s return (Tokyo Gore Police, Vampire Girl VS. Frankenstein Girl, both screened at Future Film Festival, 2009 and 2010 editions), is a crazy apocalyptic road movie, with plenty of spectacular bloody and outrageous scenes, honoring the director’s reputation.
A mysterious fog is poisoning Japan, turning most of the population into zombies thirsty of blood. The country is soon divided into two areas, one is healthy, delimited and hardly protected, the other is nobody’s land ruled by chaos. The only hope of salvation is Kira, a teenager armed with a electric saw who, leader of an improbable army of desperados, declares war to the monsters and their queen Rikka (the divine Eiji Shiina di Audition e Tokyo gore Police).

Future Film Festival 2011: A new formula and new dates

On the occasion of the 67th Venice Film Festival, Future Film Festival announces the dates of its 13th edition, scheduled from april 20th to 23rd 2011, but still waiting for official confirmations from its public and private sponsor to the new project.
2010: a year of crisis
2010 will be probably listed as the bleakest year ever for the culture in Italy, charachterized by funds cuttings by the public institutions, followed by consequent difficulties for lot of festivals. “A very difficult year”, say Future Film Festival directors Giulietta Fara and Oscar Cosulich, “which we decided to transform in an opportunity for growing up, changing the formula of the event”.
The alarm, caused by the almost total lack of public economic contribution, has been announced last January during the opening press conference of 12th Future Film Festival edition (which hosted a lot of prestigious International guests as Joe Letteri, senior visual effects supervisor of Avatar by James Cameron and winner of four Academy Awards). Only the Regional Council of Emilia-Romagna has already officially granted a bigger contribution for the 2011 edition, hoping to be folloed by other public and private sponsors. The Province of Bologna confirms the same amount of the last year. The municipality of Bologna, the public institution which obtains more benefits and glittering thanks to the Festival international profile, confirms the same contribution of the last year, although several requests of help, avoiding an increase which is necessary to organize a good event.
The organization of Future Film Festival, in spite of that and thanks to the Regional Council, is working hard to find a new bearable path to continue its work. The directors also say: “It will be a crime to let die an event which has obtained great results during the last twelve years, with an ever growing affluence of public and a lot of interest by the press”.
An original call for help was born last July, signed by the most important Italian professionals as Lucio Dalla, Bruno Bozzetto, Alessandro Bergonzoni and Enzo D’Alò, which enumerates “10 good reasons plus 1 for not missing the FFF”.
Among the others, there are these: “For 6 days Bologna opens its doors to 30000 moviegoers; an Ancient town as Bologna needs the New; The FFF is made with passion, and it’s really contagious; thanks to the FFF, Bologna became the reference point for all the people who work in the field of animation and visual effects; the public rewarded the FFF, which is loved both by children and adults.”
In spite of this difficult situation, the organizers are still full of passion, creativity and visions toward the next steps.
The new dates answer the new economic needs of the Festival, from the schedule to the format himself, but the organization manteins alive also the tradition of the FFF in January, offering a “FFF preview” with a special focus on stereoscopic 3D.
FFF New Features
The format of the new Future Film Festival foresees an extension of the 3D DAY section, which will include also a focus on Italian stereoscopy, now able to tell and propose production models and good contents.
The prestigious collaboration with Lilliwood and Cineca grants to the 3D DAY to keep the supremacy in Italy as the main event about 3DS.
The participation of the majors and the rich selection of movies premières complete the schedule of the 3D DAY. The section is edited by the journalist Marco Spagnoli.
In the four days project, Future Film Festival proposes also the idea of a thematic fair, a market dedicated to special effects and animation, which would take place under the Asinelli and Garisenda Towers of Bologna at the same time of the Festival.
ExpoPixel, this is the name of the exhibit, is a thematic exhibition dedicated to all the operators (companies and professionals) of digital production & post-production, videogames, animation.
ExpoPixel comes from the excellent experience of Future Film Festival, organized by Associazione Amici del Future Film Festival in Bologna. Tying a market like ExpoPixel to a twelve years old event like Future Film Festival follows classic Festivals like Cannes Film Festival, Berlinale and other International events.
The environment’s background
Inserting a market like ExpoPixel in an environment like the Emilia-Romagna Region represents the natural evolution of two main businesses like animation and videogames.
The most recent news is that LegaCoop Bologna adheres to the idea and declares its intention to collaborate with Future Film Festival for studying the business plan, which will be shown officially during the next edition of the event.
Animated Region - In the Emilia-Romagna Region there is a strong confidence in animation and the new ways of audio&video languages. For this reason, Associazione Amici del FFF is one of the founder members of the network “Regione Animata-Animated Region”, supported by Regional Council of Emilia-Romagna and its Film Commission.
The network has the aim to develop and promote the animation field in Emilia-Romagna with the collaboration of the companies and the freelance professionals.
Thanks to this network, the Ministry’s POGAS Project has supported the “Projects Award”, a three-year contest with the aim to produce animated short films by young authors, with the collaboration of the local companies.
Videogames - In Emilia-Romagna Region there are also a lot of companies which create and produce videogames. The production chain in this region is complete, from the production of contents and applications for mobile phones to interactive DVDs and classic videogames for console. The companies have usually new solutions and contents to sell, or licences to buy, in their portfolio.
Other institutions of the Region – like Cineca, University of Bologna, Manifattura delle Arti and the innovative poles of the industry of Emilia-Romagna - make r&d in the field of new technologies applied to the images.
FFF Sections
The two classic Future Film Festival competitions, Future Film Short and Platinum Grand Prize will also continue: “The chance to see images never seen before is a major distinctiveness of FFF”, says Enzo D’Alò, director of Lucky and Zorba and a big supporter of the Festival.
Future Film Festival is also proud to announce the invitation received by the Italian Institutions to partecipate to ExpoShanghai, that will have place from october 9th to 15th.
The staff of FFF will get thematic lessons about animation and special effects at ExpoShanghai and at Tonji University and will participate in the business travel organized by PromoBologna.
Thanks to this opportunity, FFF 2011 will set up a special section dedicated to the Chinese market.
Future Film Festival, twelve years of history and glory
Since twelve years, the Italian event dedicated to animation and special effects is an ever more important appointment to observe the mutations of both digital and traditional images, analyzing the evolution of animated and live action movies.
Future Film Festival has discovered a lot of great personalities which were unknown in Italy, like Hayao Miyazaki, John Lasseter, Osamu Tezuka, Satoshi Kon, Bill Plympton, Tsui Hark, Phil Mulloy, Nobuo Nakagawa and Paul Driessen, or animation companies that now are box office smashers like Pixar Animation Studios, Aardman Animations and Blue Sky.
Furthermore, the Festival has explored unknown cinematographies like the Iranian one or the South American one, and the new generations of artists coming from all around the world.
More than 350000 attendances and more than 150 national and international guests in 12 editions demonstrate that FFF has involved not only the city of Bologna, but also Italy and the main countries all around the world: Japan, USA, Iran, France, UK, Russia, Hong Kong, Canada, India, Czech Republic, Australia, New Zealand.
